Tilt Your Ears Toward Their Voices and Listen
Helen Frost, in her book When I Whisper, Nobody Listens, wrote something that resonated with me - gifting students with the tools to say what they needed to say, giving them voice:
“We, as teachers of writing, don’t have to help our students shout out their truths; we can help them write with precision and grace, and such writing will amplify their whispers or subdue their screams, allowing them to tell whatever kind of truth they need to share. We can support young writers as they struggle to find their most authentic voices, and we can learn to tilt our ears toward those voices and listen.”
Montana Voices is a home for students’ words. A home where we can come to listen to the truths of which young people need to speak.
